Thundering news: Wet 'n' wild weather to storm Thailand towns (2025)

Weather woes are set to strike as the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issues a dramatic alert for thunderstorms set to drench 48 provinces, including bustling Bangkok.

With heavy downpours predicted to soak 40% of the area, residents are warned of wild winds and the possibility of hail in some spots. The culprit? A pesky moderate high-pressure system hanging over the upper northeastern region and the South China Sea.

This meddles with those southerly and southeasterly winds sweeping across upper Thailand, where temperatures refuse to cool down.

Residents in these areas are advised to exercise caution due to the possibility of summer storms. It is suggested to avoid travelling through thunderstorm-prone zones, open spaces, under large trees, and near unstable structures.

Farmers are encouraged to reinforce their crops and protect agricultural produce and livestock. Health precautions are also advised due to the changing weather conditions.

Meanwhile, the Gulf of Thailand, southern region, and Andaman Sea continue to experience isolated thunderstorms. Waves in the Gulf and Andaman Sea could reach up to 2 metres in stormy areas, urging seafarers to avoid these regions.

Air quality is impacted, with dust and haze accumulation in the northern and northeastern regions remaining high, although rain is expected to stabilise or reduce these levels.

Weather forecast

The north will experience hot weather with thunderstorms affecting 40% of the area, particularly in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Lampang, Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Tak, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun. Temperatures are expected to range from 21°C to 39°C, with southwesterly winds at 5 to 15 kilometres per hour.

Temperatures will vary between 22°C and 38°C, with east winds at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.

The central region will also face thunderstorms over 40% of the area, mainly in Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Ayutthaya, Lopburi, Saraburi, Suphanburi, and Kanchanaburi, with temperatures from 24°C to 39°C and southerly winds at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.

The eastern region’s upper part remains hot, with thunderstorms across 40% of the area, notably in Nakhon Nayok, Chachoengsao, Prachinburi, Sa Kaeo, Chon Buri, Chanthaburi, and Trat. Temperatures will range from 24°C to 38°C, with southeasterly winds at 15 to 30 kilometres per hour and waves up to two metres in stormy areas.

In the south (east coast), thunderstorms are predicted in 20% of the area, particularly in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat, with temperatures between 23°C and 35°C.

The south (west coast) may experience thunderstorms in 10% of the area, mainly in Phuket, Krabi, Trang, and Satun, with temperatures from 24°C to 36°C and easterly winds at 15 to 30 kilometres per hour.

Bangkok and surrounding areas will have generally hot weather with thunderstorms over 40% of the area. Temperatures will range from 26°C to 36°C, with southerly winds at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour, reported KhaoSod.
